Sujet: [NCEP.list.NOMADS-ftpprd] Successful HWRF Upgrade 8/2
Release Notes - HWRF v11.0
Model
Hurricane Weather Research and Forecast (HWRF)
Version
11.0.0
Implementation date/time
August 2, 2017 1200UTC
Purpose
The HWRF model runs on-demand with input provided by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) or Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). HWRF consists of multiple movable two-way interactive nested grids that follow the projected path of a tropical system. The atmospheric component of the HWRF model was coupled to the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) for North Atlantic (NATL), Eastern Pacific (EPAC), and Central Pacific (CPAC) storms, and to the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) for Western Pacific (WPAC) and North Indian Ocean (NIO) storms. Also, one-way coupling to wave model (Wave Watch III) was enabled for NATL, EPAC, and CPAC storms. A sophisticated coupler was developed at NCEP for providing accurate representation of air-sea interactions. An advanced vortex initialization scheme and NCEP GSI-based HWRF Data Assimilation System (HDAS) provide the means to represent the initial location, intensity, size and structure of the inner core of a hurricane and its large-scale environment. The NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) analysis and forecasts provide initial and boundary conditions for the HWRF model.
Changes being made for this release
1. HWRF Infrastructure Enhancements:
o The NMM core of the operational HWRF model is upgraded to latest community version referred to as V3.8.1.
o Increase model vertical resolution from L61 (model top 2mb) to L75 (model top 10mb) for NATL, EPAC, and CPAC basins, and from L43 (model top 50mb) to L61 (model top 10mb) for WPAC and NIO basins.
o Meanwhile, slightly reduce the sizes of the two nested domains, from 25 x 25 deg to ~24 x 24 deg for domain 2 and from 8.3 x 8.3 deg to ~7.0 x 7.0 deg for domain
o Consider storm’s meridional movement when determining parent domain center.
o A new version of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) vortex tracker is implemented.
2. HWRF Physics Advancements:
o Updated scale-aware SAS convection scheme
o Updated Ferrier-Aligo microphysics scheme
o Partial cloudiness modification for RRTMG radiation scheme
o Updated air-sea momentum and enthalpy exchange coefficients
2. HWRF Vortex Initialization and Data Assimilation Improvements:
o Improved vortex initialization with use of a new composite storm vortex
o Upgrades to Grid-point Statistical Interpolation (GSI) including new data sets for GSI (e.g., hourly shortwave, clear air water vapor and visible AMV’s from GOES, HDOBS flight level data)
o Inclusion of fully cycled HWRF ensemble hybrid Data Assimilation System for Tail Doppler Radar (TDR) and priority storms
o Increasing the blending threshold of vortex initialization (VI) and GSI analysis (from 50 to 65 kt)
3. HWRF Air-Sea Interaction and Coupling Upgrades:
o Reducing coupling time step from 9 min to 6 min for both ocean and wave coupling
o Increasing vertical levels for MPIPOM-TC ocean model from 24 to 41 levels
o Introducing Hybrid Coordinates Ocean Model (HYCOM) coupling for WPAC and NIO basins, and using global RTOFS for ocean initialization.
o Enabling one-way coupling to wave model (Wave Watch III) for CPAC, in addition to NATL and EPAC basins.
o Obtaining waves boundary conditions from the NCEP global wave model (Multi_1)
o Using ROTFS data to initialize MPIPOM-TC ocean model for CPAC storms, in addition to EPAC storms
4. HWRF Post-Processing and Product Upgrades:
o New hurricane surface wave products are included for the NATL, EPAC, and CPAC basins, which allows decommissioning of the NCEP operational Hurricane Wave model (Multi_2).
o Maximum number of storms can be run in operational increases from 7 to 8 storms.
NOTE to users: As part of the HWRF model upgrade this year, the wave model (WAVEWATCH III) has been coupled with the HWRF model to produce high resolution hurricane driven wave fields. Under the storm, the wave field from this coupled system provides superior wave guidance in hurricane conditions. But due to its existing configuration, the far-field conditions (away from the storm) need 18-30 hours to spin up. As such, users are advised to continue to use the global wave model (Multi_1) for far-field wave forecasts.

Sujet: [NCEP.list.NOMADS-ftpprd] HMON implementation 8/15/2017
NCEP is pleased to announce the implementation of the new hurricane model, HMON.
Release Notes - HMON v1.0
Model
Hurricanes in a Multi-scale Ocean coupled Non-hydrostatic model (HMON)
Version
1.0.1
Implementation date/time
August 15, 2017 1200UTC
Purpose
This release is the first version for the HMON system. The HMON system runs on-demand with input provided by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC). The atmospheric component of HMON is a triple-nested regional model, with two movable, two-way interactive nested grids following the path of a tropical system. It is coupled to HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) through a coupler developed at NCEP to providing accurate representation of air-sea interactions. The NCEPGlobal Forecast System (GFS) analysis and forecasts and Real Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS) provide initial and boundary conditions for the HMON system. This version has been fully tested and compared with the GFDL hurricane model results. Retrospective runs have shown significant skill improvements in term of storm track and intensity forecasts in Northern Atlantic Basin, Eastern Pacific Basin and the Central Pacific Basin.
Changes being made for this release
This release is the first version of HMON
1. Uses NMMB as the atmospheric dynamical core;
2. Time step of dt=30s;
3. Uses three nested domains, with domain size: d01 (75º x 75º), d02 (12º x 12º) and d03 (8º x 8º);
4. Uses 43 vertical levels, with the model top at 50 hPa;
5. Advanced physics package for hurricanes;
6. Includes vortex relocation for initialization;
7. Two-way coupling with ocean model (HYCOM) for Eastern Pacific and Central Pacific basins;
8. Uncoupled configuration for the North Atlantic basin.

Re: messages de la liste de diffusion de la NOAA
Bonsoir;
