This one could be interesting. I once saw a 16mm documentary made by students of Chile about Valparaiso, under the guidance of Luis Bunuel. It was a masterpiece, a real work of art. I've been dreaming of Valparaiso ever since! "Nous irons à Valparaiso..."

Tokyo Valpo 2020 Wind update

Message par Coromandel » 22 sept. 2020 18:56

I am curious to know why the times for wind updates and wind status symbols on the Tokyo Valpo race are different than on the other races. :?:

Hi Coromandel,

The winds forecasts download is a bit slower than on other races because:

- max forecast is set to +144 hours to allow long distance routing, but the download starts only when the max forecast files are released, rather late

- wind zone is big, whole Pacific, thus a lot of files to download and process

West border of the wind zone has been shifted again 10° to the East tonight, and this will be repeated as the fleet moves eastward.
When the whole zone will be available a bit after 06h30 and 18h30 UTC+2, the max forecast will be increased to +156h and later +168h.

After the Europe time shift next October 25 (UTC+2 ---> UTC+1), the forecast files will be available one hour before, so there should not be anymore delays, except NOAA troubles.

Hence my suggestion that the races be set at UTC+1 all year around. This would have the advantage to always have updates always, except for big trouble at NOAA. It would also be fairer to users living in other countries who will have only their own country's time changes to worry about (2 for me) instead of both their country's and France's (4 changes for me).

Just my two bob's worth :D

Hey limelight !

Not sure most of players would cope with a shift from 08h00 / 20h00 to 07h00 / 19h00 twice a year...

Europe time shift should have stop next year, but due to delays (...) it seems to shift to the year later at least...

Sorry for our non-european players, but so nice that you dare to play though... :!: ;)

No worries Blaise, I just thought it was the obvious solution. It's strange but of all the things I miss from LiveSkipper, the fact they ran their game on UTC time is the one I miss the most. Interpolated winds was nice but wind cases have their quirks as well and they make the game interesting in some other ways, the accuracy of the scheduler is also an advantage here.

If France stops daylight savings next year then good, if it could also get rid of the defeatist mentality it acquired in WWII and set its clock to Paris time (UTC+0) instead of Berlin time (UTC+1) it would be even better

An interesting race , with soo many varied tactics. Top group over 600 miles ahead of a following northern route with Hello Boy, Vanna among the chasers.
While to the far South, Petibato & blzblz are ploughing East, cutting the 2 nothern groups as they rise in the rankings. How far will they rise ?
These 2 are 320 miles ahead of followers such as ankez in 21st.

Having changed my mind twice on tactics, one was through the middle but clearly wasn't going to work after a couple of forecasts. The the semi Northern group route that Vanna had taken, before deciding on the South, but much too late.
Now in the South at 36 knots, but not enough by far.
Petibato & blzblz will be interesting to watch, while i will gain a few, hoping for a top 30
regards

Hey limelight and Kingfisher829 !

Any link to this documentary about Valparaiso, limelight ? I do like some of Bunuel's movies :)

Kingfisher: open ocean race was needed after the TDF, Solitaire, and Calva, crossing the Pacific ocean might be repeated next years.

Widely open to different routes.
The 8s of the first north group leaded by Padigun should win.
Chasing petitbato, I'm aiming at finishing into this group, that I quit some days ago at 50° N...

Fair winds . .. ~ . \_(_/ . ~ . ~~
