Re: The race
Hi vanna and all.
The boat speed decreases linearly from 0% (at border) to 100% (at center - boat stopped) when sailing into the icebergs. This happens as soon as you cross the iceberg limit.
When sailing into the icebergs, the boat speed displayed on the interface has a red background: light red on the edges, and getting darker the closer you are to the center.
The icebergs move a bit randomly:
They are like a boat: they have the same polars, but they don't use the best sail, so they move slower than a real well driven boat.
Their heading is set randomly and change randomly as well.
Each iceberg moves inside its "box" (a few degrees min and max latitude and min and max longitude).
They start at the left lower corner of their box, and then move randomly inside. When they reach the upper limit (north) of their box, they disappear and start again at the left lower corner.
Each iceberg box is different, their extent is a few degrees of latitude and a few degrees of longitude.
Some iceberg boxes may overlap each other.
The upper (north) limit of the boxes ranges from 49° S up to 43° S.
As they are a a bit cpu consuming for the server (to compute all boats distance to each of them), we haven't scatter icebergs all round the antartic ocean yet. But this will be done little by little, as the fleet moves esatward.
Depending on the configuration, it might be better to sail a bit into an iceberg to reach faster a wind cell with better parameters. Remember that you loose only a few percents of your speed if you stay close to the edges.
As far as I know, the projection line ahead of the boat does not take into account the speed reduction that occurs inside an iceberg.
Ask if more explanations are needed.

Re: The race
Thanks for the information about the icebergs Blaise, but from what I understand from above paragraph, I could be happily sailing along in the left lower corner of a box with an iceberg well north of me (in the same box) and then without notice have it and the penguin land on my yacht.blzblz a écrit : ↑30 nov. 2020 11:56

Thanks for your interesting contribution. You are right, it is not fair to have an iceberg falling on you from nowhere while sailing rather south.
We checked the south limit of each "box" and some where really to much to the north (some around 46° S if I remember well).
So we updated the latitude of the starting points, a few degrees souther than the buoys when they are close to a buoy, and around 5 or 6 degrees souther when they are half way between two gates.
Unfortunately, theses updates reset some of the icebergs to their starting point, so some players might have planned a route tonight to avoid them, but now the iceberg have gone farther south...
We apologize for this. We should have better anticipate this new feature.
Fair winds, best regards.
Re: The race
Last night Paradise made substantially less distance then the scheduler promised me yesterday
try to find out , why
how
I noticed some boats trying illogically to sail around an iceberg, so I thought better to start reading this race info.
now suddenly I do read , well into the race there is an additional explanation on icebergs.
very disappointing from RG to let us all in the dark and come with additional rules well into a race
my first impulse was to cancel my VG in RG and to sail only my boat in the other game (name not to be mentioned)
but than, I am already 30+ days in , so lets continue.
but in future , I hope that RG makes every race a fair race by explaining the rules for a race ahead of the start
sail on, on my way to downunder

Re: The race
Hello Ard,
I'm sorry for the inconvenience but regarding the iceberg gtlog gave a first explanation here on November 14th and blzblz gave detailed information on November 30th also on this topic.
Fair winds to you old chap and glad to see you always with us

Re: The race
I am not a big fan of these icebergs. A number of days ago I sailed into one because I had no idea when I set out the course in which direction it was moving and at what speed. Yesterday morning (french time) there was an iceberg flying all over the place, from one box to another.
Good to see that there are no icebergs on the horizon at the moment.

Re: The race
All I can see is that it is better to try and pass them by sailing above them as they are apt to suddenly jump back down to the start of their box. If you click on the penguin, as you would another boat, you can see their track, so at least you can get an idea of which way they are going.
