Odysseus and his men have fallen into the Lestrygon trap. The giants slaughter the crew. Only Ulysses and a few of his men manage to escape: a single ship with a handful of sailors manages to leave the island and turn back towards Italy and the island of Aea, where the sorceress Circe is staying. Circe transforms Ulysses' men into pigs. Ulysses foils Circe's trap with a decoction that prevents him from transforming. He convinces the sorceress to free his men.
Ulysses then travels to the Underworld to meet Tiresias, who can read the future. Tiresias advises him on the next stage of his journey.
At sea, Ulysses and his men hear the mairmaid song, which leads to madness and drives men to throw themselves into the sea. Ulysses is tied to the mast so as not to succumb to the mairmaid's call.
It's not exactly practical for sailing, but Ulysses' ship nevertheless comes within sight of a strait guarded by two sea monsters, Charybdis and Scylla. During this crossing, he loses several men, who are devoured by Scylla...
