Re: FAQ's: How to solve a Grounded Boat?

I grounded the boat going through the Bosporus last night. When I discovered this I lifted the anchor and pointed the boat towards open water. I immediately tried to activate the scheduler so that the boat would change course to further open water after 2 minutes of sailing, but this could not be done. Also tried activating the waypoint option with the same result. By the time I had tried all of this my boat was grounded on the other side of Bosporus.

What am I doing wrong :?: :?:

I deliberately grounded my boat again on the coast of Ibiza to try the procedure again.
1) lifted anchor and chose a sail
2) turned the boat towards open water
3) activated a few schedule points (within the iteration period)

and .............VOILA!!... no problems.

Well done Frank, you solved your own problem.

One thing that's funny, if you're programming some scheduler points and take your own sweet time, when the time goes over the iteration minute, I've observed the points seem to move like something weird is going on, but if you then do a refresh (green button with white arrow) they all go back to where they were before, and you can then continue with the programming. Just a quirk of the system I guess.

Paradise grounded again in the Expresso 2019 Mono.
It looks like the boat turned too early, but as I had set the mark around 1400, thus before the 2000 wind shift , the reduced winds strength (?) will be blamed for that.

what I observed however is that my boat traveled a fair amount of Miles over the beach before returning to the water. That looks very strange.

it looks like my boat did not stop at the beach, but traveled on land till the next iteration.
After I got to the helm, without a problem, she traveled over land on the new heading and back into the waters.
So I gained some miles as well, and though difficult, you still can see the course over land.

funny.

No no no, boats don't travel on land ! :) (not yet I mean... )

It's only the tail drawing that is not accurate when running aground.
The tail goes into the ground up to where the boat should have sailed the next iteration if no land.
The next point of the tail is where the boat was the first iteration minute after sailing again.

You can try with it the demo boat or your boat. Put some schedule points to run aground then to sail again in another direction. Refresh each 10 minutes but don't touch the settings, you'll see your boat running aground, but staying on the coast at the exact place where it ran aground, then start sailing again; but you'll notice that the tail goes a bit into the ground, as in the picture you posted above.

This is a minor cosmetic bug, and there is no plan to fix it, although I must admit it can be a little confusing.
(For the record: we had - a long time ago - a hard time setting a working coast detection and boat positioning after collision, but it is now 100% efficient)

About what led you to run aground, you are right, the new winds at the wind shift must have been lower or with a less favorable angle, thus slowing the boat.
In this case (when not possible to control the boat after the wind shift display at 06h30 and 18h30 european time), it can be dangerous to use the scheduler when close to the ground, as you experienced it).
Sometimes, the Auto heading tool or the waypoints can help quite well.

Hope this is clear enough.
Regards
